Mike Booth (Winnipeg, MB)
Mike Booth, residing in Winnipeg, is one of Canada’s best marathon runners. As the four- time champion of the Manitoba Marathon, Mike comes into the 2010 Canadian Derby Edmonton Marathon in great shape and hungry for his first Edmonton Marathon Championship title. Mike has been an elite athlete and a coach for over a decade, with success throughout his years at the University of Manitoba.
Philip Samoei (Kenya)
Philip, originally from Kenya, is currently living in Esquimalt, BC. An incredible marathoner, he has the stats to prove it. In 2009, Philip finished second in the 2009 Intact Edmonton event, second in the Calgary Marathon, and fourth in Victoria. Since then, Philip has returned home to train and has returned to Canada in great form. After a strong 2010 BMO Vancouver Marathon, look for Philip to post another impressive time on this Edmonton course.
Gilbert Kiptoo (Kenya)
Gilbert is an accomplished Kenyan runner. He enters this year’s Canadian Derby Edmonton Marathon with confidence from a recent first place performance in Australia. Gilbert competed in the 2010 BMO Vancouver Marathon challenging the leaders on the tough, rainy course. Gilbert will be one to watch on Alberta’s capital’s fast course.
Robert Renman (Camrose, AB) Masters Division
Based in Camrose, Alberta, Robert races frequently and covers a variety of distances from 5K to the marathon. In previous years, Robert has achieved 31:35 in the 10K and 1:09:42 in the half. As a new Master, this will be the first time Robert races in this category at the Canadian Derby Marathon. Robert hopes to continue his strong Alberta road racing season which included running as one of the top masters in the BMO Vancouver Marathon earlier this spring.
Jack Cook (Edmonton, AB)
A former member of Canada’s national cross-country ski team and coach of the Edmonton Nordic Ski Club, Jack is now one of the best long-distance runners in Canada. Jack has won the Canadian 50K Trail Running Championships with a record-breaking time, was a two-time winner of the National 100K Championships and was a three-time winner of the gruelling 125K Canadian Death Race. But Jack’s competition and success are not limited to the racecourse. He also owns Fast Trax Run and Ski Shop, a successful, independent, specialty boutique for runners and skiers. Outside of the store, Jack’s success continues: Red Deer Marathon, 2:43:50, 2009; BMO Vancouver Marathon, 2:34:37, 1999; and Toronto Marathon, 2:31:50, 1991.
Mike Palichuk (Langley, BC) Masters Division
Mike Palichuk is a marathon and ultramarathon runner formerly from Sherwood Park, now living in Langley, BC. Presently running as a master with the Vancouver Falcons Athletic Club, Mike has focused his attention on the marathon distance. In his twelfth marathon, Mike ran 2:50 at the 2009 California International Marathon. Mike is training to make his fourteenth marathon, the Great Canadian Derby Marathon, his fastest yet. Mike recently won the Mens 40 - 49 division at the 2010 North Face Canadian Death Race, placing seventh overall.
